Senior Mechanical Engineer – Data Center Design
Location: Remote (U.S.)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $200,000 – $250,000 base + equity
Benefits: Full Benefits Package
Our client is a fast-growing AI infrastructure company designing next-generation data centers to support high-density GPU compute workloads across the United States. The company is developing a standardized data center platform intended for rapid deployment at scale and is assembling a senior engineering team to define how these facilities are designed from first principles.
This is a senior, design-focused mechanical engineering role with real ownership. You will be responsible for shaping the mechanical and HVAC design approach for high-density data centers, setting design standards, developing repeatable templates, and influencing system-level decisions that will be replicated across multiple facilities.
The role is suited to an engineer who enjoys complex HVAC and thermal challenges, prefers upfront design and architectural work, and wants meaningful influence over how large-scale infrastructure is built.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and evolution of mechanical and HVAC systems for high-density data center facilities across the U.S.
- Own system-level mechanical design including cooling plant, hydronic systems, heat rejection, and air distribution strategies
- Develop and maintain standardized, modular mechanical design templates to enable repeatable deployment
- Drive early-stage concept design, analytical modeling, and system selection for new data center projects
- Ensure mechanical designs integrate effectively with IT load requirements and electrical power architectures
- Apply engineering judgment using CFD modeling, airflow analysis, and thermal capacity planning
- Act as the technical interface between internal teams and external mechanical and MEP design consultants
- Review consultant designs, calculations, and equipment selections to ensure performance, efficiency, and reliability targets are met
- Support multiple concurrent design programs in a fast-paced environment
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 5–8 years of experience designing mechanical or HVAC systems for large-scale or mission-critical facilities, ideally data centers
- Strong experience with data center cooling infrastructure including chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, CRAHs, and airflow management
- Familiarity with high-density compute cooling requirements
- Proficiency in Revit / BIM for mechanical design and template development
- Strong analytical capability, including CFD modeling and thermal analysis
- Comfortable operating with a high level of ownership and ambiguity
- Experience working with and managing external engineering consultants
Preferred Experience
- Experience with advanced cooling approaches such as liquid-to-chip or immersion cooling
- Background developing standardized or modular data center designs
- Experience acting as an owner’s engineer or internal design authority
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary of $200,000 – $250,000
- Meaningful equity from day one
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Retirement plan aligned with U.S. norms
- Generous PTO policy
