Why design and commissioning hiring is so demanding
Commissioning is a discipline where a candidate either has genuine critical environment experience or does not, and that distinction is rarely obvious from a CV alone. The talent pool is small, demand from hyperscale and colocation programmes is constant, and the strongest professionals are seldom on the open market. Generalist agencies tend to struggle here, because they cannot interrogate the technical detail and end up forwarding candidates who interview convincingly but cannot contribute from day one.
Design hiring carries a different but equally serious risk. A shortage in the design team early in a programme delays procurement, construction and commissioning in turn. Getting these appointments wrong is expensive, measured in programme slippage and avoidable rework, which is why clients increasingly want a recruiter who can tell the difference between adjacent experience and the real thing.
