About the job

Mechanical Engineer, Modular Data Center R&D

Location: Austin, TX (on-site)

Salary: $200,000 to $250,000 per year, plus equity

Type: Full-time

The role

One of the most active hyperscale data center developers in the US is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to join its Modular R&D team in Austin. You will be designing HVAC and cooling systems for a new generation of modular and prefabricated data center products, including thermal management for the high-density AI and GPU compute environments that are driving the next wave of data center demand.

Liquid cooling and direct liquid cooling experience is particularly valuable here. The shift to 50kW and above per rack has made conventional air cooling inadequate for the most demanding workloads, and this team is building the product that solves that problem at scale. If you have designed cooling systems at that density and want to do it inside a developer with a gigawatt-scale pipeline, this is worth a conversation.

What you will be doing

  • Design mechanical and HVAC systems for modular data center units covering precision cooling, chilled water, CRAC/CRAH, liquid cooling, and economization
  • Develop thermal management solutions for high-density AI and GPU compute environments above 50kW per rack
  • Produce mechanical drawings, equipment schedules, and fabrication documentation for modular products
  • Perform cooling capacity modelling and thermal analysis to validate designs against performance requirements
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, structural, and controls engineers throughout the design and product development cycle
  • Coordinate with cooling OEMs and fabrication partners to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet performance targets
  • Support prototyping, factory testing, and commissioning activities as required
  • Contribute to the development of internal mechanical design standards for the modular product line

What we need from you

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 4 to 10 years of mechanical engineering experience with data center cooling, HVAC, or thermal systems background
  • Strong understanding of data center cooling infrastructure including CRAC/CRAH, chilled water systems, and precision cooling
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE data center guidelines and thermal management standards
  • Experience working in a cross-discipline engineering environment
  • Comfortable working at pace in an iterative R&D environment

Compensation and benefits

$200,000 to $250,000 per year DOE, plus equity
