Recruiting for data center teams in Malaysia
Malaysia runs two data center markets at once and they hire for different things. Johor holds the large new campuses, drawn there by available land, power and water and by its position on Singapore's border, so the work is construction, connecting utilities and bringing new capacity into service. The Klang Valley and Cyberjaya hold the older cluster of cloud regions and carrier-neutral colocation, where the demand is for people who can run a live estate well.
We recruit across both. Malaysia is also the market where an employer is most likely to be competing for the same engineer with a company in Singapore, because someone living in Johor can cross the border to work and be paid in a stronger currency. We factor that into the advice we give on a package, and we tell you at the briefing which of your roles it affects.
- Permanent, contract and executive search
- Hyperscale operators, colocation providers, main contractors and consultancies
- Johor and Klang Valley roles on one desk

Roles we recruit in Malaysia
A selection of the positions we fill for hyperscale operators, colocation providers, main contractors and design consultancies working in Malaysia.
Construction delivery
The largest share of Malaysian demand, concentrated on the Johor campuses. Clients look for people who have delivered a data center specifically and who can hold a programme together while several phases run at the same time.
- Project Director
- Senior Project Manager
- Construction Manager
- Package Manager
- Site Manager
- MEP Coordinator
- Planner
- Cost Manager
- HSE Manager
Power, water and site infrastructure
The Johor campuses were sited on the availability of land, power and water, and each of those has to be built out, connected and approved. These are the roles that carry that work.
- HV Electrical Engineer
- Grid Connection Manager
- Substation Project Manager
- Utilities Coordinator
- Water Systems Engineer
- Environmental and Permitting Manager
- Sustainability Manager
Commissioning
Specialists who prove the systems perform before a phase is handed over. On a campus built in phases this is continuous work rather than one exercise at the end, which is why these roles stay open the longest.
- Commissioning Manager
- Commissioning Authority (CxA)
- Electrical Commissioning Engineer
- Mechanical Commissioning Engineer
- Integrated Systems Testing Lead
- Completions Manager
- QA and QC Engineer
Critical operations
The teams running live facilities, both in the established Klang Valley and Cyberjaya estate and on the Johor capacity now entering service. This is the group most exposed to competition from employers across the Singapore border.
- Critical Facilities Manager
- Data Center Manager
- Operations Manager
- Shift Lead
- Electrical Shift Engineer
- Mechanical Shift Engineer
- BMS Engineer
- Data Center Technician
Leadership and commercial
Senior and confidential appointments, including country leadership and the commercial roles that sell colocation and wholesale capacity into the Malaysian market.
- Country Manager
- Head of Operations
- Programme Director
- Commercial Director
- Business Development Manager
- Account Director
Tell us the role and we will confirm whether it is realistically fillable from within Malaysia, what it should pay against both local and cross-border expectations, and how quickly it can move.
Why employers choose Clear in Malaysia
Four things that shape how a Malaysian search runs.
We price a role against the border, not only the local market
Someone living in Johor can work in Singapore and be paid in Singapore dollars. A package that looks competitive against Malaysian benchmarks alone can still lose the candidate, so we tell you where that applies to your role and what it takes to win against it.
We cover both Malaysian clusters
Johor and the Klang Valley hire for different work and the people are not always interchangeable. One consultant across both means we can tell you whether the person you need is in the other cluster before you widen the search overseas.
We screen for data center delivery, not adjacent construction
Malaysia has a deep construction and engineering base, so a shortlist fills quickly with strong general project people. We check for data center delivery experience first, which is the most common reason a good CV does not survive technical interview.
We plan around the local advertising step
An Employment Pass for an overseas hire follows a period of advertising the role locally and interviewing Malaysian candidates. We build that into the timeline at the briefing, so the start date you plan around is the one you will actually get.
How we work with you
Three ways to engage, depending on the role and how quickly you need someone in post.
The disciplines we recruit into in Malaysia
Each discipline below is run by consultants who work that field specifically. Malaysia splits the demand in two: project and construction management, site development and commissioning for the Johor campuses, and technical operations and automation for the established Klang Valley estate.

Data Center Recruitment Malaysia: your questions answered
We cover five areas. Construction delivery on the Johor campuses, which carries the largest share of demand and runs from project directors and construction managers through to planners and cost managers. Power, water and site infrastructure, covering the HV, grid connection, utilities and permitting roles that a new campus needs. Commissioning, which on a campus built in phases runs continuously and covers commissioning managers, CxA professionals, completions managers and electrical and mechanical commissioning engineers. Critical operations for live facilities. And senior leadership and commercial appointments. If the role you need is not on that list, ask anyway: it is a sample of what we fill rather than the limit of it.
Both of the country's data center clusters. Johor holds the large new campuses, including the developments around Sedenak, Kulai and the Iskandar Puteri corridor, and most of the construction, utilities and commissioning demand sits there. The Klang Valley and Cyberjaya hold the longer established cloud and carrier-neutral colocation estate, where the work is weighted towards running live facilities. The two hire for different things, so we ask which one a role sits in before we start.
In two ways. It is part of why the campuses are there at all, because Singapore controls how much new capacity is approved and a share of that demand is met across the border instead. It also sets the level a Johor employer competes at for people, since an engineer living in Johor can commute into Singapore and be paid in Singapore dollars. That is the single most useful thing to understand before you set a package for a Johor-based role, and we give you a view on it at the briefing.
Yes, and it is common on commissioning and specialist delivery roles. An Employment Pass for an overseas hire follows a labour market step: the employer advertises the role on the government's MYFutureJobs portal and interviews Malaysian candidates before the application is considered. That is a timeline item rather than an obstacle, and we build it into the plan from the start. The detailed requirements are set by the Malaysian authorities and are revised from time to time, so we confirm the current position at the briefing rather than working from an assumption.
The shape of the demand is close to the opposite. Singapore's work is weighted towards getting more out of facilities that already exist, so operations and efficiency experience carries the most weight there. Malaysia's is weighted towards building and commissioning new capacity, particularly in Johor, so delivery experience leads. The two markets also draw on an overlapping pool of people, which is why we treat a Malaysian search and a Singaporean one as related rather than separate.
Shortlisting is usually quick. We work from a mapped network covering both Malaysian clusters and the wider region rather than from an advert. What follows depends on the route: a candidate already living and working in Malaysia moves on their notice period, while an overseas hire adds the local advertising step and pass processing on top. We put a realistic date against your specific role at the briefing rather than quoting an average.
Permanent hires are normally contingent, so you pay when your candidate starts. Senior and confidential mandates run retained, with the fee staged across the search in return for exclusivity and a mapped market. Contract placements carry a margin over the day rate. Where a role involves someone relocating into Malaysia we set out which mobilisation costs sit with you before the search begins, so the full cost is clear up front.
