Recruiting for European data center teams
Across most of the European mainland, the thing holding a data center programme back is power. Getting a site connected takes longer than building on it, which puts a premium on the engineers who can move a connection forward and design to the efficiency standards the market now expects.
Those are the people we are asked for most. We also recruit the construction teams delivering in the markets where power is more readily available, and the operations staff who run Europe's large installed base of existing facilities.
- Permanent, contract and executive search
- Operators, developers, main contractors and consultancies
- One consultant across the mainland

Roles we recruit across Europe
A selection of the positions we fill for operators, developers, main contractors and design consultancies working on the European mainland.
Grid and power
The scarcest group in Europe, and usually the one that unlocks a programme. Far smaller than the general engineering pool, and competed for by developers, operators and utilities at the same time.
- Grid Connection Manager
- HV Electrical Engineer
- Power Systems Engineer
- Energy Manager
- Substation Project Manager
- Consents and Permitting Lead
Design and engineering
Engineers carrying the technical definition, including the efficiency specialists European projects are increasingly measured against.
- Lead MEP Engineer
- Electrical Design Engineer
- Mechanical Design Engineer
- Cooling Systems Engineer
- Sustainability Manager
- BIM Coordinator
Construction delivery
Delivery teams for new build, concentrated in the markets where power is available, and for upgrade programmes inside facilities that stay in service.
- Project Director
- Senior Project Manager
- Construction Manager
- MEP Coordinator
- Planner
- Cost Manager
Commissioning
Specialists who prove systems perform before handover, and who re-commission after an upgrade to a live facility.
- Commissioning Manager
- Commissioning Authority (CxA)
- Electrical Commissioning Engineer
- Mechanical Commissioning Engineer
- QA and QC Engineer
Critical operations
The teams running Europe's large installed base, where retention matters as much as attraction and language often decides the pool.
- Critical Facilities Manager
- Data Center Manager
- Shift Lead
- Electrical Shift Engineer
- Mechanical Shift Engineer
- BMS Engineer
Tell us the role and the country and we will confirm what it should pay, whether it needs a local language and how long it is likely to take.
How we staffed data center programmes across Europe
Across three long-running mandates we placed 160 specialists into data center construction, design and operations for NTT, VIRTUS and the contractors delivering alongside them. The work spanned 13 European markets and included building a 49-person technical operations function from scratch.
- NTT
- VIRTUS
- Winthrop Technologies
- Dornan
- Jones Engineering
- Specialist placements delivered
- 160
- European markets covered
- 13
- Person operations team built for VIRTUS
- 49
Why employers choose Clear in Europe
Four things clients tell us make the difference on a European search.
We screen for grid and consent experience first
In most European markets the scarce skill is not building a facility but getting it connected and consented. That pool is much smaller than the general engineering market, and it is where we start a search rather than where we end up.
We establish the language requirement up front
Client-facing, consenting and site leadership roles usually need the local language. Design and commissioning roles often do not, which opens a far wider pool. Getting this wrong after a shortlist means starting again, so we settle it at the briefing.
We plan around employee consultation
Works councils are a statutory feature across much of the mainland, and changing a team structure is a process rather than a decision. We build that into the hiring plan from the start instead of discovering it midway.
Free movement is an advantage we use
Moving an EU national between member states is largely a notice period question, which makes contract engagement genuinely fast here. We use that where a programme needs people quickly rather than defaulting to permanent hires.
How we work with you
Three ways to engage, depending on the role and how quickly you need someone in post.
The disciplines we recruit into across Europe
Each discipline below is run by consultants who specialise in that field. European programmes turn on grid connection and power engineering more than anything else, with design and commissioning close behind, because a site that cannot be energised on time does not open on time.

Data Center Recruitment Europe: your questions answered
We cover the mainland, including Germany, the Netherlands, France, Ireland and Portugal, and we are regularly briefed elsewhere in Europe too. The UK is covered separately as a market in its own right, run from the same London office. If you are building somewhere not listed, tell us where and we will set out how we would resource it.
Because in most European markets it is what decides whether a programme moves. Connecting a site to the network takes longer than building on it, and the people who can navigate that process, build an energy case and get it consented are a far smaller group than general engineering talent. They are also being competed for by developers, operators and utilities at once, so a search that starts there rather than ending there tends to move faster.
It depends on the role, and it is one of the more expensive assumptions to get wrong. Client-facing work, consenting and permitting, and site leadership usually need the local language because the people on the other side of the table are local. Design, commissioning and specialist engineering roles frequently do not, which opens a much wider European pool. We settle it for your specific role before a search starts.
They make a change to a team a process rather than a decision. Where a works council exists it carries rights to information and consultation, so restructuring a team, changing terms or introducing a new shift pattern involves a consultation that takes time. It rarely prevents a hire, but it changes the sequence, and it is far better built into the plan at the start than discovered halfway through.
For an EU national, more quickly than anywhere else we recruit. Free movement removes the sponsorship and visa steps that dominate timelines in the Gulf and much of Asia, so a move between member states is largely a notice period question. That makes contract engagement genuinely fast on the mainland. For non-EU nationals the position is country-specific and we confirm it before a search rather than at offer.
All three, plus developers and the specialist vendors on power, cooling and controls. Each briefs differently: contractor hiring is schedule-driven, consultancy hiring is judged on client-facing credibility as much as technical depth, and operator hiring turns on whether someone has run an estate to the standard the business needs. We scope the search accordingly rather than running the same process for each.
Permanent hires are normally contingent, so you pay when your candidate starts. Senior and confidential mandates run retained, with the fee staged across the search in return for exclusivity and a mapped market. Contract placements carry a margin over the day rate. Where a role sits in a works council environment we also set out how consultation affects the timeline before a search begins.
