Electrical Engineer, Modular Data Center R&D

Salary: $200,000 to $250,000 per year, plus equity

The role
One of the most active hyperscale data center developers in the US is hiring an Electrical Engineer to join its Modular R&D team in Austin. You will be designing power distribution, switchgear integration, and controls systems for a new generation of modular and prefabricated data center products ,units that need to deploy fast, at scale, and perform reliably from day one.
This is not a standard design consultancy role. You are working inside the developer, on a product that is being iterated in real time, alongside structural, mechanical, and controls engineers in a hands-on R&D environment. The pace is fast, the scope is broad, and the comp reflects it.
What you will be doing
- Design electrical systems for modular data center units covering power distribution, switchgear integration, UPS, generator paralleling, and controls interfaces
- Develop electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and construction and fabrication documentation for modular products
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, structural, and controls engineers throughout the design and product development cycle
- Review and validate electrical designs against NEC, NFPA 70, and NFPA 110 standards
- Coordinate with electrical equipment OEMs and fabrication partners to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet performance requirements
- Support prototyping, factory testing, and commissioning activities as required
- Contribute to the development of internal electrical design standards for the modular product line
What we need from you
- Degree in Electrical Engineering
- 4 to 10 years of electrical engineering experience with data center, power generation, or industrial electrical design background
- Strong understanding of power distribution systems including medium voltage, switchgear, UPS, and standby generation
- Familiarity with NEC, NFPA 70, and NFPA 110
- Experience working in a cross-discipline engineering environment
- PE license a plus but not required for this R&D role
Good to have
- Data center electrical design experience at a design firm, EPC, or OEM
- Experience with switchgear manufacturers such as Eaton, Vertiv, or Schneider Electric
- Modular or prefabricated construction background
- Familiarity with generator paralleling and critical power redundancy design
